UN Removes Penalties on Syrian President Prior to Presidential Visit

Placeholder Syrian President

United Nations Security Council members gave the green light to a US resolution removing restrictions on Syria's leader Ahmed al-Sharaa ahead of his presidential meeting next week.

Sharaa was named provisional head of state after leading an insurgent campaign that removed Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, ending over a decade of domestic strife.

The US representative UN ambassador Mike Waltz stated the United Nations delivered "an emphatic political statement" that acknowledged Syria entered "a fresh chapter" after Assad's removal.

Sharaa was under United Nations restrictions in his role as head of the religious organization HTS, previously associated with the terrorist network. Washington eliminated the organization from the catalog of foreign terror groups in July.

Further Restrictions Lifted

The UN also removed sanctions on Syrian Interior Minister the interior minister.

The nation's top diplomat applauded the lifting of the penalties, stating online: "Syrian officials convey thanks to Washington and supportive states for assisting of Syria and its people."

Forthcoming Presidential Visit

Sharaa's White House visit on Monday follows US President Donald Trump stated the Middle Eastern president demonstrated "substantial headway" in establishing peace to the war-torn country.

Subsequent to their talks, Trump remarked the Syrian leader possessed "a genuine opportunity for national reconciliation".

The pair met for the first time in May, during Trump's Riyadh trip during a visit to the region.

After that meeting, America's leader characterized him as a "resilient figure" having a "formative history".

His Islamist group HTS served as al-Qaeda's branch within Syria prior to breaking relations in 2016.

Earlier American Trip

Monday's visit will not be his initial visit to the United States this year. This past fall, he emerged as the initial Syrian president to address the global assembly in New York after approximately sixty years.

Throughout his presentation, he said Syria was "restoring its proper position across international circles" and expressed solidarity toward Gaza's residents.
