The fast bowler Set to Play a Key Part in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches set to start on the 21st of November in the WACA.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the prospects of taking part.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and there are permutations around that, not only his injury, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he will feature a key capacity. With luck it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand recently after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of recurring issues, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from three Australian summers in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the series.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against India as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the initial game as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games regardless. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we opted to take a cautious route."
