The fast bowler Set to Play a Key Part in Ashes Series

Test match action

The pace bowler has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest set to start on the 21st of November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the prospects of participating.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations at play, not just the physical problem, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a key capacity. Ideally starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India recently after scans revealed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from several home seasons in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the national team for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches anyway. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
