Teenager Found Deceased Following Untrue Accusations of Stealing Cremated Remains
One 14-year-old boy was discovered deceased only a few days after being falsely blamed of stealing the ashes of a dead baby during a break-in, an inquest has heard.
Tragic Discovery
Kai Lloyd's parents found his remains in his bedroom at his Flintshire residence on November 19th, 2021.
False Allegations Start
The investigation heard how his mother got a message on November 8th, 2021 via social media, from a individual inquiring if Kai was her child. The message stated: "Inform him appreciation for burgling my flat."
In a statement presented to the court, the mother said the individual had been in the news, claiming her infant's ashes had been taken in a break-in - a claim which was false.
Police Inquiry
An official inquiry from police later determined the supposed burglary complainant had "lied to police" and "evidence shows that the items was never stolen in the first place".
News coverage about the alleged stolen remains generated online comments, and although the teenager was not identified in the posts, his parent said individuals "understood it was him".
The "social media content were really distressing", she said.
Emotional Health Effect
She explained that her son had been diagnosed with mild attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and as part of that condition, other individuals' views genuinely were important to him.
"It would have affected him severely," she said, "especially when this was untrue".
Kai was arrested at his residence, but no evidence was discovered. He was taken to a law enforcement facility and later released pending further inquiry.
Authorities said they would be in touch, the inquest heard, but had failed to reached out to the family by the time of his passing.
Isolation and Anxiety
His parent said Kai "became isolated" after the arrest and "would keep asking me whether I had heard anything from the authorities", because his condition meant sometimes "a minute could seem like much longer".
When she talked to him about the supposed incident, she said her child told her he had gone into the house because the resident who lived there had said he could utilize the bathroom whenever he wanted, but denied taking anything.
Digital Bullying
In a joint statement between her and her husband, the mother said her son was being bullied digitally after the accusations.
The inquest learned that one 19-year-old urged Kai to kill himself.
She had no worries on the evening before he passed away, describing how she had listened to him "chuckling and teasing".
She described him as a "compassionate, affectionate" young man, and said her "relatives is totally devastated".
He had been "obviously hiding his worries", she stated, noting that he could not bear to have anybody "have negative thoughts of him".
Educational Reaction
The inquest heard from school staff at Connah's Quay High School.
On 8 November, she "overheard some students talking that the student had been detained and that was the first I heard".
"He told me... he'd done nothing wrong," she added.
After the conversation, the staff member said she rang Kai's family landline and provided a message saying she had spoken to Kai about the allegations.
The proceedings heard his parents said they did not got that communication.
Formal Conclusion
Senior investigator told the inquest he would wait for reports regarding what improvements had been made to handling individuals with ADHD, before deciding whether he should make a prevention of future fatalities report.
Delivering a descriptive finding, he said: "Around 8 November 2021, unsupported allegations were made against the teenager, a 14-year-old individual.
"Likely untruths were afterwards embellished and exaggerated through the medium of social media.
"During 11 November, he was interviewed by the authorities and after his interview he was released while inquiries continued."
The official concluded: "Exists no proof that the acts or omissions of any agency caused or contributed to his death and although it was the outcome of a self-inflicted act it is impossible to discern his purpose."
