Mikel Arteta feels assured that his squad can keep managing with player absences after disclosing that star striker Kai Havertz remains out for several more weeks.

Extended Absence for Havertz

Havertz has been sidelined since the summer after undergoing an operation on his knee. Hoped to return earlier in December, Arteta revealed the player encountered a problem when stepping up his training and failed to reach “to the next level.”

“We took lessons, and managed to assemble a squad that is far more dependable and has increased versatility,” commented Arteta.

Tactical Decisions for Brentford Clash

This update creates a dilemma for the midweek home game against Brentford. A decision is required between continuing to use Mikel Merino, who scored in an unfamiliar forward role on Sunday, or reinstating Viktor Gyökeres, who came back from a muscle injury in the latter stages. Long-term absentee Gabriel Jesus is also in contention after 11 months out.

Fitness Doubts Linger

More doubts surround defender William Saliba and attacker Leandro Trossard, who both missed the Stamford Bridge game. Consequently, new recruits Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are likely to start again in the heart of the defence for the table-toppers.

Arteta believes the significant outlay on new players in the last transfer window has resulted in a much stronger position to deal with such setbacks.

Greater Options Vital for Title Challenge

Questioned if more options was benefiting their league challenge, his response was positive. “Absolutely, since the current term has been worse in certain positions, and now the problems with the backline,” he continued.

“Our previous experiences taught us that we have to use players in alternative spots, and they have to be able to adapt to new tasks if we aim to challenge at the highest level. And the case of Mikel is just the best one.”

Manager’s Sympathy for Suffering Star

Speaking about the setback previously mentioned by Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann, Arteta offered additional context. “He was doing everything. He was unable to progress to the required step and now the signs are like we have overcome that hurdle.”

The manager conveyed his personal desire to see him return. “Everyone is eager to have him. I mean, it’s a player that, in my view, I admire greatly for the qualities he offers to the team, but his character, his personality. I observe his frustration being outside.”
