The atmosphere at Lazio's home ground was decidedly gloomy on Saturday afternoon. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, an opponent that had allowed ten goals while netting just two in their most recent five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their ongoing dissent in a long-running conflict with club owner Claudio Lotito.
The Campaign Coming Unstitched?
Was the team's progress unraveling, or was there ever a thread holding it together to start with? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as manager this summer, only for him admitted that the club had omitted to inform him about a ban on new signings they were facing for fiscal problems. Speculation that he might quit were without basis, but he stated that Lotito had "swindled" him.
The Roman club were just as chaotic in their performances as off the field, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in their other opening fixtures, featuring the derby della Capitale. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to determine if they're getting better or imploding.
Cancellieri's Unexpected Presence
At least one man continued to smile amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to be at Lazio this season. He completed the previous campaign with Parma on loan and, at the start of the off-season, his parent club were pushing for him to stay there for another season. The signing restriction necessitated a reconsideration. They were unable to thin their squad with no new signings.
Cancellieri arrived initially when Sarri was last in charge, at that time a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 league appearances with the club in 2022-23, almost all of those as a substitute. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who left after that campaign, would later accuse Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri was destined for stardom but then not selecting him."
Discovering His Best Role
Perhaps the manager was still trying to work out the nature of the player's talent. Billed as an attacking winger upon signing, Cancellieri instead found himself much of that season as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. Across 63 games on loan at Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
