{'I could have killed them' - Lawson encounters dangerous incident with Formula 1 marshals
Formula 1 racer Liam Lawson stated he barely escaped a potentially deadly incident during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when two marshals darted across the track directly in front of him
The concerning event took place on the third rotation when safety workers were observed on the racing surface as Lawson was rejoining the race following an quick visit to the pits to swap his broken nose section
Racer's Instant Response
Immediately after, Racing Bulls driver Lawson communicated to his pit wall engineer saying: "Is this for real? Did you witness that? I might have... taken their lives"
"I genuinely couldn't process what I was observing"
"I exited on a new set of hards, and then I got to Turn One and unexpectedly appeared two dudes running across the track"
"I came close to striking one of them, truthfully, it was so dangerous"
Track Safety Questioned
"Clearly there's been a miscommunication somehow but I've never experienced that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's absolutely inexcusable"
"We fail to grasp how on a ongoing race track safety personnel can be authorized to just sprint across the track in that manner. I have no idea why, I'm certain we'll get some form of reasoning, but this must never be repeated"
Official Investigation Underway
Formula 1's governing body, the FIA, is actively examining the situation
"Following a turn one incident, the race directors was notified that wreckage remained on the track at the critical section of that bend" stated the FIA
"During the third lap, marshals were alerted and put on alert to access the circuit and clear the fragments once the entire field had cleared the area"
"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had entered the pits, the directives to deploy personnel were rescinded and a caution signal was raised in that area"
"We are still investigating what transpired following that moment"
