England Explore for FIFA 2026 Training Facilities Amidst Concerns of Missing Out On First-Choice Base to the Dutch.
The FA has dispatched operational staff to the America this week to evaluate potential facilities for the upcoming global finals, amid growing worries that their preferred base could be allocated by the Netherlands.
Draw Complexities Alter Arrangements
Head coach Thomas Tuchel had previously approved an FA strategy for England to be based in Kansas following a pre-tournament training period in Fort Lauderdale. But, following last week's group stage draw, there are now concerns that the Netherlands, who have their group games in Kansas, will be awarded priority on the chosen facility at Sporting Kansas City—a high-performance centre used by US Soccer.
FIFA assigns training bases based on geographic location and FIFA rankings if there is competition, with the draw potentially pitting the FA against the Netherlands and Argentina for bases in the tournament's south-central region.
Exploring Alternative Options
With England's group stage matches set to take place in Dallas, Boston, and New Jersey, the FA is now understood to be looking at other locations on the east coast. The FA began its search for training bases at the start of the year, with Tuchel and technical director John McDermott touring potential locations during the Club World Cup last summer.
In spite of this advanced planning, there was always an acceptance that the final tournament draw could drastically change their logistical arrangements.
Knockout Stage Logistics Strategy
England face the eighth most arduous group stage schedule in terms of travel distance. Winning Group L would put England on course for a round of 32 game in Atlanta, then a potential last-16 tie in Mexico City.
- Major Change: The FA may opt to choose to travel from match to match for the knockout stages should England qualify, a significant departure from its standard protocol of having a fixed tournament base.
- FIFA Encouragement: FIFA is understood to be actively encouraging such a flexible approach for the expansive 2026 tournament.
After the base camp is finalized, the FA will turn its attention to scheduling two pre-tournament matches in Florida at the beginning of June.
