Egypt's Diplomatic Chief Pressures the Palestinian Group to Accept Trump's Gaza Strip Proposal and Disarm

Cairo and Doha are working on attempts to convince the Palestinian faction to agree to the former US president's demand to end the war in Gaza, as stated by Egypt's top diplomat.

Increasing Diplomatic Pressure on Hamas

Badr Abdelatty emphasized that the opportunity is now for the organization to disarm and avoid providing Israel any pretext to prolong its offensive in the region, where numerous civilians were killed on Friday.

“We must avoid providing any justification for ongoing civilian casualties, which have escalated far beyond the events of October 7th,” Abdelatty remarked.

He explained that Cairo is “coordinating with our brothers in Qatar and with our colleagues in Turkey in order to convince Hamas to respond positively to this plan”.

Key Points of the Trump Proposal

The initiative would necessitate the group to:

  • Surrender weapons and exit politics
  • Hand over the captives in custody from the 2023 attack, with 20 are thought to survive

In return, Israeli authorities would:

  • Phase out its troops from the territory
  • Be replaced by an global peacekeeping unit
  • Support a transitional authority under Trump

Observers believe that the initiative would effectively terminate its existence as an militant organization, while the Israeli side would make few concessions.

Internal Divisions within the Faction

The organization is divided over the appropriate answer, with factions seeking additional time to evaluate the proposal.

The head of Hamas’s military wing has resisted the plan, considering it a move to eradicate Hamas if they accept.

Those familiar with the matter report that the faction is inclined to seek modifications regarding:

  • The requirement to lay down arms
  • Remaining troops of soldiers in the area
  • Assurances that the group’s leadership will not be pursued

Gaza Situation Intensifies

Israeli forces persisted in its operations in the northern area and shelling across the wider strip on the recent day, claiming the lives of 28 people.

Several of the victims were in the northern city, while the rest were killed in the south, including three in an aerial attack in a southern area, which had been previously designated a protected space.

Israel issued its ultimate directive for Gaza City on Wednesday, with the top defense official stating that those who stay would be labeled as militants, a label that violates humanitarian standards.

Numerous of people remain stranded in the urban area, including those who cannot afford the trip to southern Gaza, which reportedly costs over a thousand dollars.

“Countless individuals are forced to sleep outdoors while seeking refuge,” commented a Red Cross spokesperson.

United Nations agencies said that there is no safe place for people fleeing Gaza City, as areas designated as secure areas in the south are lethal.

A UNICEF spokesperson described the concept of protected spaces as “absurd”, noting that airstrikes are dropped with frightening frequency and shelters designated as temporary shelters are often destroyed.

Hospitals under Extreme Pressure

Medical facilities in southern Gaza are stretched to the limit, with the aid clinic accommodating more than double its intended capacity.

Recently, al-Nasser hospital admitted the remains of 27 individuals of people killed by the troops.

The head of paediatrics described the situation as “very hard”.

Israeli forces has been alleged to be attacking doctors and clinics, with healthcare professional said to be “abducted” while heading to her job in Khan Younis.

Israel has asserted that apprehended doctors had connections to the group, though without providing evidence.

Fatalities from the conflict in Gaza has amounted to at least 62,622 Palestinians fatally injured and nearly 170,000 hurt, as reported by the local health officials.
