American Armed Forces Conducts Deadly Strike in Eastern Pacific, Leading to 4 Fatalities
As stated by a senior defense spokesperson, the American military executed a fatal kinetic engagement on a boat in the eastern Pacific, killing four individuals.
“A US joint task force carried out a lethal kinetic strike on a vessel operated by a terrorist group in international waters. Surveillance verified the vessel was traveling along a known drug smuggling route and was engaged in illicit drug transport. All four male drug traffickers were killed, and no American forces were harmed.”
Background and Prior Strikes
The statement comes a day after a declaration regarding a blockade of all targeted oil tankers to and from Venezuela. That statement on online platforms, the US president alleged Venezuela of using oil revenues to fund drug trafficking and other crimes, vowing to escalate the military presence.
Just on the previous day, the Pentagon stated it had conducted strikes on three boats it accused of trafficking drugs in the Pacific, leading to the deaths of eight people. Since 2 September, over 20 strikes have resulted in the deaths of at least 99 people, most off the coast of Venezuela.
Administration Justifies Tactics Amid Scrutiny
The administration has encountered growing pressure to make public video of a September 2nd vessel attack. But, the defense secretary have declined to do so. The administration has defended its campaign as a success, saying it has stopped drugs from entering US shores and has dismissed concerns that it is stretching the bounds of legal military action.
While the administration has stated the campaign is about halting drugs headed to the US, remarks from a top official appeared to suggest a broader geopolitical aim. In a recent interview, the chief of staff remarked the leader “wants to keep on destroying vessels until the Venezuelan president cries uncle.”
This suggests the series of strikes may be part of a strategy to oust Venezuela's sitting leadership.
